About Capgemini CSR strategy
A “responsible” product is not just about:
- Its place of manufacture
- The materials it is made of
- Its packaging
- The mode(s) of transport used
Sustainable/eco-friendly sourcing is not enough by itself. Even the most eco-friendly, sustainable materials can become unrecyclable if they are mixed to create a product. 100% polyester is 100% recyclable (if it goes to a specialist recycling centre). 100% cotton is also completely recyclable, but if you mix them in a fabric, whether it is 50/50, 70/30 or even 95/5, it cannot be recycled and will end up in landfill.
Similarly, with most small electronics – like wireless chargers and Bluetooth speakers, which may be encased in “eco-friendly” or biodegradable materials – they will inevitably end up in landfill because when they break, the electronics won’t be separated from the casing by the consumer – that will only happen it the item is taken to a local recycling centre and placed in the correct bin. Most will end up in the domestic waste bin and eventually landfill. All of these items will be in landfill with Capgemini logos on them!
So, always read the descriptions and if it is not clear, ask. Don’t be fooled or distracted by items that are constructed of 100% recycled or 100% organic …anything, because whilst from a sourcing point of view, it is important and obviously the right thing to look for, it can easily become irrelevant when you realize that at the end-of-life of the item, it cannot be recycled or reused because the materials are mixed.
Not everything that comes from China or non-European countries is bad, there is modern slavery in every country in the world.
The main thing to consider whenever thinking about branded goods, well any goods in fact, is the whole life cycle of the product and what happens to it when it becomes unusable and has to be disposed of.
How to choose a “responsible” product?
Remember, the first CSR criteria of a product is its long-lasting use by the final clients.
Before ordering any products, ask yourselves:
- Do we really need this product?
- Do we know exactly what we are buying?
- Do we know exactly where it is coming from?
- Are we considering the life cycle of products? (End of life, Extended life)
- Is it part of the circular economy? Is it plastic free? (or recyclable)
- Does it contain PCC (Post-Consumer Recycled)?
- What is the packaging? 100% recycled or renewable materials used in the construction and 100% recyclable end of life by 2023
- How will products be delivered? Reduce transport-related emissions
- Is there a more sustainable solution
What CSR criteria should you consider?
- Scarce materials
- Sustainable sources
- Conflict minerals
- Anti-bribery
- Human Rights
- Labour Law
- Slavery
- Child Labour
- Health & Safety
- Reduction of Carbon (logistics & delivery)
- Reduction of Energy use
- Reduction of Water usage
- Social Value
- Zero Waste
If in any doubt, contact us. We will always investigate and advise you on any products regarding suitability.
